My wife and I have three grandsons and we’re proud of each of them and their parents. The oldest kiddo is only nine but, I suspect, he’ll be running a bank, engineering firm, or computer company before he leaves college. The youngest is just seven months old so we’ll have to wait a while to see what direction he’s leaning. The middle grandson is three but he’s always thinking, is full of antics, and you never know what he will say. Our daughter recently sent us a video of an impromptu ‘concert’ with him using the couch as his stage while belting out a few lines of “I’ve Got Peace Like A River.” I can tell you that the loud and unharmonious way he was singing and wildly strumming the plastic ukulele was anything but peaceful. It did make me laugh (a lot) and think about all of the ways that we're blessed. That ‘concert’ cost nothing but my heart was full just watching it. The whole spontaneous production took me away from the daily stresses and brought some balance to a long day. I think that’s the definition of so many blessings we receive. In this case, it was great entertainment to boot!

Ultimately, each of us has different gifts, talents, tastes, and experiences. Together, it makes a meal of fellowship that reminds me of those family spreads I used to enjoy every Sunday at my grandparents’ place. The tabletop in that old house was brimming with food. Laughter and stories mixed with the aroma of the feast, and some of the most incredible desserts left us wishing we could find room for even more. To this day, my wife is still trying to perfect the homemade apple pie my grandmother effortlessly crafted, without measuring cups, every week.

One of the many attempts to mirror my grandmother's homemade apple pie. It was close but we're still working on the perfection she crafted every week.

This week’s post may seem like a rambling mess. And, you know, sometimes, our lives can feel the same way. Ultimately, though, there are countless blessings just waiting to be remembered and counted. This Thanksgiving I’ve challenged myself to share more laughter, give more grace, listen more freely, and let others have the last word more often. Remember, nothing is as perfect as many social media posts make it seem, and no one has a life without problems. With that said, each of us can be grateful for something. That, after all, is what the spirit of Thanksgiving is all about...even if it comes in the form of an unexpected concert that's loud and out of tune! 😊😂
