Over the years, my family and I have had the privilege of spending time in Washington, D.C. While the politics of the place can dominate the news, the area is also home to some of America's most amazing history. One of our memorable visits occurred when our kids were younger. Not only were we able to experience things through the excitement in their eyes but it was humbling to see so many reminders of the days before, during, and after our nation's founding. Many of those moments are highlighted by times of extraordinary triumph and accomplishment. There are also quiet spaces surrounded by somber reminders of the cost of freedom and cruelties in the world.
If you've never spent time in the different museums of the Smithsonian or the emotion-evoking sights of special memorials in the U.S. Capitol, I'd encourage you to place the trip high on your bucket list. It's a journey through the past that directly impacts your present and future. (When you go, give yourself plenty of time. A full week is not unreasonable)
From Mount Vernon and Ford's Theatre to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and so much more, there's almost 250 years of history and heritage to take in. Threaded through it all is the selfless sacrifice of so many who've paid so much to protect and preserve the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave. It is the very essence of what makes America possible. This weekend, and every day, we remember and honor those who have stood in the gap, making the choice to make a difference.
No surrender, concession, or abandonment of Independence will ever define this Great country. Through the promise of vigilance, resilience, and allegiance, we hold tight to what we hold dear. As we pay tribute to the fallen on this Memorial Weekend and Day, we also pray for the Lord's mercy and blessings on their families. May God be our Guide as He continues to Bless This Nation.
