In 2010, I wrote an article about some significant activity that had been taking place at the old Gestring Wagon factory in St. Louis, Missouri. At the time, MoDOT (Missouri Department of Transportation) was conducting archaeological studies on the forgotten factory grounds. It seems a new bridge was to be built (and now has been) over the Mississippi River and the vacant land would be taken in by part of the interstate addition. Today, fifteen years later, seemed like a good time to revisit that story so, I've added it to the 'Articles' section of our website. I have a few more of these long-form accounts that we'll be posting to the site soon.
St. Louis was once referred to as 'Mound City' due to the number of massive Native-American-built mounds in the area. Check out more of these details as well as info on the Gestring Wagon Company in our 'Articles' section.
Collectively, I've been able to share dozens of presentations and hundreds upon hundreds of articles, blogs, and written evaluations over the decades. Our published content has become the largest single-source collection of details related to western wagons and stagecoaches. Even so, the information doesn't begin to cover what's held in our Archives nor does it scratch the surface of the two hundred year history of America's first transportation industry. Clearly, we have a lot more to share and we're pleased to continually assist folks with identification and background details.
A special shout-out to the folks with the Birdsell and Winona wagons that we identified this week. It's always good to help put pieces of provenance back together. To that point and back to my original focus on the Gestring Wagon Company, I encourage you to check out the Articles section on our website and the anniversary re-posting related to this legendary brand.
Have a great week!
David
